By Books

Hub member Distinguished Professor Sharynne McLeod is in Greece this month for the launch of The Oxford Handbook of Speech Development in Languages of the World at the International Clinical Linguistics and Phonetics Conference. Edited by Sharynne and published by Oxford University Press, this groundbreaking volume spans 80 chapters, 49 languages, 27 dialects, and includes contributions from 173 authors. Languages explored include Māori, Samoan, Sesotho, Setswana, isiXhosa, isiZulu, Zapotec, Warlpiri, and dialects shaped by colonisation and slavery, such as African American English, Tok Pisin, and Jamaican Creole. Included is a chapter on Warlpiri speech development which was co-authored by Carmel O’Shannessy, Alice Napurrurla Nelson, Jessie Nungarrayi Bartlett, and Vanessa Peltharre Davis. Due for full publication in 2026, this Handbook honours First Nations knowledges through a rights-based, social justice lens.
